The November 3rd election will be a hot topic for months after it is over. Most people are interested in how the President's relationship with Monica Lewinsky will affect the Democratic party throughout the country. Many Democrats are shying away from the President because they feel it may hurt their campaign. Find out what some of New Mexico's candidates think here. The purpose of this page is to keep track of the Governor's race in New Mexico, including: links to candidates home pages, information from the latest polls and links to them if available, a link to the Secretary of State's Home Page to look at the latest ballot counts on the day of the election. This page will also describe some of the issues facing the candidates and their perspectives on those issues.
What's an election without a debate. If you feel like discussing or debating with others about certain issues there couldn't be a better place than right here. It is a chat room where you can express your thoughts with others or learn from others what issues the candidates are facing.
A recent article that I read talked about how many debates there were going to be between Governor Gary Johnson and Martin Chavez. Twenty-seven were scheduled to the best of my knowledge. The article considered this to be the most amount of debates ever held for a governor's race.
Issues:
How do people go about deciding who do vote for? Many people vote for whatever party they are affiliated with because it is embedded in them at an early age. How do they choose a party? Most people affiliate themselves with the same party as their parents since they have the greatest impact on a child's life. To find out which issues are ranking high in New Mexico, take a look at this Albuquerque Journal Poll.
Debates:
-
Thursday, September 3, 1998. Gary Johnson is proposing to cut state taxes, $110 million over the next three years. Martin Chavez argues that Johnson's plan would cut funding for schools and that the biggest tax breaks would be given to those in a high tax bracket--those making over $75,000/year. Other issues being argued were the private financing for the widening of NM State Road 44 and the recent ranking of NM as the worst state to raise children by the Children's Rights Council out of Washington.
-
Monday, September 28, 1998. Watch this incredible debate online here. Type NM in the search by state box. Once a transcript of the debate is obtained, it will be posted on this site.
-
Wednesday, October 7, 1998. A debate being held at the University of New Mexico's Woodward Hall at 7:00 PM. Topics to be discussed include education and Gov. Gary Johnson's plan to increase tuition at New Mexico Universities by 13%.
Polls:
-
October 7, 1998 A poll conducted for the New Mexican shows candidates in an almost even race.
-
September 20, 1998 A poll conducted for The New Mexican by Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research Inc., a Maryland-based firm. The poll also discusses issues involving the percentage ratings of the candidates.
- September 20, 1998 The New Mexican also conducted their own poll of how voters feel about the candidates. This link doesn't offer any numerical statistics but it does offer opinions about the candidates and how the candidates feel on different issues.
- Here is a list of Campaign
Contributions. This isn't a poll but does to some extent indicate who is supporting who in this election.
